More about MSM

We sell two kinds of MSM, Opti-MSM and Lignisul MSM. The testing that we have cited here has been done by the Opti brand, We offer two kinds because some people prefer the OptiMSM and some prefer the Lignisul.

I have heard that there are patents on MSM. Do you sell patented MSM?

Opti-MSM (Cardinal Nutrition) pays royalties to MSM Investments Company, LLC which is the current holder of the patents. Lignisul brand (Carolwood Corporation) won a court case in August of 2001 stating that the patents have run out., expired or are invalid. There is information out there that states neither manufacturer is the patent holder.

Does MSM help with detoxification?

Yes! Not an easy answer, but a good question. It is my understanding that MSM helps the cells in our bodies become more permeable. More able to let nutrients into the cell, more able to let waste material out. Sulfur has that property in our bodies. As we age the cell walls also get stiffer, harder for nutrients, neurotransmitters and waste to get in and out. If you don’t take enough or have enough sulfur, toxic build up may occur in the cells and in the body. Hence, stiffness, achiness, allergies and diseases happen to us.

So, not enough sulfur in the body systems equals waste build up and then leads to dis-ease, or lack of ease. Continued build up equals worsening conditions. Allowing more sulfur in our body equals detoxification, a start of the cell process to get rid of waste and toxic material.

Can you take too much MSM?

Excess MSM is excreted in the urine. You may get loose stools from too much MSM, but that too is part of the detoxification process. Not the most pleasant thing, but it gets the job done and you detoxify. If that happens, you can decide to tough it out if that is an option for you or decrease your dosage some, but don’t quit. Then increase your dosage again until you are experiencing the desired results, no pain and stiffness, ease of breathing, decreased allergies, etc. Sometimes while you are waiting for the pain to subside, you realize that you have become very regular with bowel movements. You are not sneezing and your eyes are not itchy and watery. You are able to move more freely and your breathing is easier. You have more energy.

How to start.

Well, my friend, the author and the publisher of the book,  The Forgotten Nutrient, MSM: On the Way Back to Health with Sulfur, gives several ways to start taking MSM. Her book is for sale here on our website. She says, “try adding it to your distilled water dispenser.”

Just for your information:

¼ teaspoon = 1 gram
1 teaspoon = 4 grams
1 gallon jug = 4.5 teaspoons
5 gallon jug= ½ cup of MSM or (24 teaspoons)
Also ¼ teaspoon = 1- 1000 mg capsule

“MSM is available in capsules and powder. The daily dose may range from 2 -20 grams depending on your body weight and state of health, etc. The precise dose is really not critical as it is considered a food. The first week or so you may want to take a larger dose to compensate for deficiency. If you are experiencing symptoms of allergies, arthritis, digestive disorders, (including parasites) or some other serious health problems, it is best to 'detox' first using higher levels of MSM to obtain the quickest results.

Everyone is different and different tissues in the body respond at different rates. Lungs, considered one of the vital organs of the body, respond quicker than arthritic joints. You could notice a difference in your lungs as soon as 3 days. Some conditions may take 2-3 weeks to notice a difference.” We have had people say they feel better overnight. (It is all individual response so it is very hard to tell how your body  will react.) “The longer it is used the better and quicker the results. The higher the amount used the quicker the results,” according to Beth Ley PHD.

First Week: "Detox"
* Very little taste.
20-30 grams MSM daily
  Other Serving Suggestions:

Split into ½ capsules and ½ powder in distilled water.

Dissolve 1 tsp of powder or small flakes in 12 ounces of distilled water.

  • For a much more pronounced taste, dissolve in a smaller amount of water and drink quickly.
  • Add to juice or flavored water if desired.
  • You can then drink pure distilled water as a wash.

Beth says, “Drink at least five 12 ounce glasses of MSM water spread throughout the day." If you follow her directions, that would equal 18 grams of MSM Daily.

Additional MSM capsules can be supplemented as needed through the day. Add Vitamin C at least twice a day.

Water is very important to help flush toxins out of your tissue and cells. The more water the more toxins released, the faster the results and the fewer side effects of detoxification, so drink lots of water. I cannot stress that enough.

MSM has the ability to produce energy. Some people may experience a difficulty sleeping, so avoiding taking MSM after 6 PM may be the answer. Possible side effects: One may experience headaches, fatigue or flu like symptoms for the first few days due to the detoxification process. Do not be alarmed as this is the natural part of the healing process.

You can decrease or increase the MSM as your body requires.

Beth has a theory that “first you fill your cup in the body and then you can decrease as needed." We have found that we need the amount that we take which has remained about 10 grams in the morning and 10 grams at night. As a trained nurse, I thought that we should start slowly. It took forever for us to see results. I ignored people that told us to take more. Then I started taking more and we started not hurting! Noticed less stiffness, allergies were much better. Irregularity became a thing of the past. I had thought that I was being advised to take more to increase sales. While that may be true, we quit hurting.

I then found Beth and her book and realized after talking with her we could possibly cut back on our dosage when our cup was full. Roger has tried that and found that if he cuts back he starts to hurt again. He has decided to keep taking the same dose and stays pain free. I take less now, but we still take MSM daily. If I forget to take it or we are out of the house for a day trip or errands. I start feeling the pain in my feet and legs by nightfall. As a nurse I worked 8 and 12 hour shifts. That meant that I was at work 9 – 13 hours a day depending on the shift. It also meant that I was on my feet, taking care of patients most of that time. I rarely hurt at all.

Can I take MSM with other medication?

MSM is compatible with all medications.  If you take coumadin you may have to decrease your dose of that. You may ask your Doctor regarding taking MSM.  Most don’t know its benefits. Don’t be afraid to try it. It may well be the best decision you have made. We all need to take back the control of our health. We have choices. We can make intelligent educated changes in our daily lives. We don’t have to be sick and in pain. We don’t have to rely on prescription drugs that have so many bad side effects.
